I hope, that way back in August, you were smart enough to lay heavy money on both East Carolina and Houston to win their divisions.  You should have done it the moment after reading my preseason Conference USA preview when I predicted these two would clash come December 5th.  What’s that you say?  You didn’t place the bet despite me sharing my genius with you?  Oh well…what might have been.

To be fair, Houston and East Carolina haven’t technically won their divisions yet.  So let me break this down for you.  In the East, the winner of the East Carolina-Southern Miss game wins the the division title.  A Southern Miss win will give them the head-to-head tiebreaker over ECU (obviously) and they already beat UCF (since UCF could also finish 6-2 in conference), meaning a win and the Golden Eagles play next week.  An ECU win means the division title and the right to host the championship game having finished the season with one loss in league play.

In the West, Houston wins and they are in since they beat SMU a month ago.  SMU would have to beat Tulane and have Rice upset the Cougars to make it to the title game.  Houston would host the championship game if Southern Miss wins since UH owns the head-to-head tiebreaker.  If SMU ends up meeting Southern Miss, I have no idea who would host.  Both teams would be 6-2 in conference and since they didn’t meet this season, the team with the higher BCS ranking would be host.  I doubt either one of these two can crack the BCS ranking next week, so hell if I know.

Anyway I was 2-4 against the spread last week (47-41-1 for the year) and 4-2 straight up (65-25).  First, the meaningless games (and many expletives to those of you who thought “but isn’t every C-USA game meaningless?”)

Memphis @ Tulsa (-16½), Golden Hurricane 41-20
UCF @ UAB (+3), Blazers 23-22
Marshall @ UTEP (-1½), Thundering Herd 38-33

And the games that matter:

Southern Miss @ East Carolina (-6), Pirates 27-24
Tulane @ SMU (-17½), Mustangs 34-23
Rice @ Houston (-30), Cougars 45-18
